Volgens Johanna Spiller en Marlena Conen, oprichters van Klapstoel Academy, is er ook in 2021 nog een groot verschil tussen carrièrekansen voor mannen en vrouwen. “Jonge getalenteerde vrouwen hebben kansen, rolmodellen en goede adviezen nodig om hun potentieel op de arbeidsmarkt te laten zien”, aldus Johanna Spiller. Klapstoel Academy ondersteunt jonge vrouwen bij dit proces. GroBusiness helpt Klapstoel Academy een stap verder met het businessmodel en opent deuren naar relevante contacten en potentiële pilot-bedrijven.

“Toen ik na mijn studie begon aan mijn eerste baan ervaarde ik net als veel anderen een cultuurshock”, vertelt Johanna. “Op de werkvloer gaat het er niet meer om wie het hardst werkt of wie het beste rapport oplevert. Het gaat veel meer om wie je moet kennen om een carrière-stap te maken, het begrijpen van het politieke spel en de dynamiek in een organisatie.” Als Marketing Manager bij een groot ICT-bedrijf zag ze veel vrouwelijke collega’s stoppen. Dat zette haar aan het denken. “Ik heb zelf toegang tot goed onderwijs en vrouwen die mij waardevol advies geven. Dat gun ik andere vrouwen ook.”

Johanna Spiller en Marlena Conen raakten geïnspireerd door een quote van Shirley Chisholm: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair”. Zo ontstond de naam voor hun bedrijf: Klapstoel Academy. Met dit initiatief geven Spiller en Conen jonge vrouwen de kans om in contact te komen met senior carrière vrouwen met wie ze kunnen sparren over hun ambities en uitdagingen op het werk. Klapstoel Academy organiseert netwerk events, senior classes en één-op-één coaching. Ze bedachten de ‘Vrouwmibo’, een informeel netwerkmoment met speciaal bier van Gebrouwen door Vrouwen.
GroBusiness opent deuren
Een paar maanden na de oprichting van Klapstoel Academy kwam Johanna in contact met Frans Arkema van GroBusiness. “Tijdens het eerste gesprek was Frans best kritisch over ons businessplan. Hij luisterde, dacht met ons mee en hij zag kansen voor het businessmodel van ons bedrijf. Hij heeft een business coach aangedragen die ons helpt bij het aanscherpen van ons businessmodel. Ook bracht hij ons in contact met relevante partijen waar wij mee kunnen samenwerken. Frans is heel proactief en opent deuren voor ons in zijn netwerk. Met een van de bedrijven die hij heeft aangedragen zijn we nu serieus in gesprek om een pilot te starten.”
Pilot bedrijven gezocht!
Johanna en Marlena zijn bezig met het opzetten van een membership model, waarmee vrouwen tegen een zeer laag tarief lid kunnen worden van hun community. Daarnaast zijn ze op zoek naar bedrijven die willen deelnemen aan een pilot voor het accelerator programma. Meer weten? Neem dan contact op met Klapstoel Academy.
“Onze plannen voor de toekomst? Wij willen de kloof tussen man en vrouw op de werkvloer dichten. Niet alleen in aantallen maar ook in gelijkheid. Wij geloven niet dat het probleem is op te lossen enkel door het plaatsen van een vrouw op een bepaalde positie, als die vrouw daar niet gelukkig is.”

The glass ceiling… do we still encounter it?! According to Johanna Spiller and Marlena Conen, the founders of Klapstoel Academy, in 2021 there is still a big gap between career opportunities for men and women. “Young talented women need opportunities, role models, and actionable advice to make their potential seen on the job market”, says Johanna Spiller. Therefore, Klapstoel Academy supports young women in this process. “When I started my first job after finishing my studies, like many others, I experienced a culture shock”, says Johanna. “In the workplace, it’s no longer about who works the hardest or who writes the best report. It is much more about who you need to know to make the best possible career move, and understand the politics and the dynamics in an organization.” As a Marketing Manager at a large IT company, she saw many female colleagues quit. That got her thinking: “I, myself, have access to good education and know women who give me valuable advice. I believe that other women should also have that access.”

This is how the name of their company was born: Klapstoel Academy. With this in mind, Spiller and Conen give young women the opportunity to connect with senior career women, with whom they can discuss their ambitions and challenges at work. More, Klapstoel Academy organizes networking events, senior classes, and one-on-one coaching. They created the ‘Vrouwmibo’, an informal networking event with special beer brewed by women. GroBusiness opens doors
A few months after the founding of Klapstoel Academy, Johanna met Frans Arkema from GroBusiness. “During our first meeting, Frans was quite critical about our business plan. He listened, sat with us throughout the process, and sought our company’s business model opportunities. More, he has appointed a business coach to help us fine-tune our business model. He also connected us with relevant parties that we could work with. Frans is very proactive and opens doors for us in his network. We are now seriously discussing the possibility of starting a pilot project with one of the companies he has suggested.”
Pilot companies wanted!
